Queenstown set to revel in biggest spring snowfall in years
Skiers and snowboarders are set to rejoice in the aftermath of what’s expected to be the biggest spring snowfall in years – promising fantastic spring snow conditions in time for the September school holidays (September 24 to 10 October).
Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona ski areas all report generous helpings of the white stuff overnight, with huge flakes falling throughout today and more forecast for this weekend as part of a wintry blast
hitting New Zealand.
Destination Queenstown CEO Tony Everitt says the arrival of fresh snow will bring a bumper spring skiing season and there’s already an “awesome vibe” as snow continues to fall in downtown Queenstown.
“The mountains and low lands are just plastered. It’s a winter wonderland here with trees, roof tops and hillsides blanketed in snow almost to lake level. This dump heralds amazing spring skiing and promises superb snow cover for the school holidays. It’s a perfect opportunity for winter lovers to head to Queenstown for a final spring ski fling,” he says.
Cardrona spokesperson Nadia Ellis says she’s thrilled with last night’s heavy snowfall of 30cm on the mountain.
“This is a huge fall for this time of year, it will take us into a record-breaking September,” she says.
The Remarkables Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence is “delighted” to be back to winter.
“Forty centimetres fell last night and this is set to continue through the next two or three days. We’re all geared up for an awesome school holidays. Once these skies clear, conditions will be absolutely magic for skiers and boarders,” he says.
At Coronet Peak, Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie says 15cm has already dumped on the resort and much more was expected over the next couple of days.
“It’s very exciting to get this boost for spring skiing. We’ll be set up for great skiing and riding from now until the end of season.”
Mr Everitt says spring is a fantastic time to visit the resort.
“The skiing is still superb and all the summer activities are starting to get underway.”
Queenstown was recently voted Number 1 ‘Outdoor and Adventure Destination in the World’ by Trip Advisor’s 2010 Travellers’ Choice awards.
