New mountain bike service creates a host of opportunities for Queenstown visitors

An iconic New Zealand tourism operator has added another attraction to its portfolio and boosted Queenstown’s reputation as a world-class adventure tourism destination.

Skyline Queenstown, which has been operating gondolas locally for more than 40 years, has launched mountain bike (MTB) access to a range of trails through the Ben Lomond forest that overlooks the famous resort town.

Its new gondola-assisted bike lift joins Skyline’s existing ‘must-do’ visitor experiences including stunning views, thrilling Luge ride and ‘Taste of New Zealand’ buffet restaurant.

Queenstown Mayor Vanessa Van Uden officially opened the new MTB service last Sunday which initially runs as a four-month trial. She was joined by more than 200 VIPs and keen bikers who attended the opening to get an early taste of the action.

First up in the specially adapted gondolas was local superstar and 2004 world junior champion, Scarlett Hagen. She was followed by eager hoards of bikers drawn by the prospect of well-maintained, feature-packed riding and comfortable, easy access. More than 1,400 laps were clocked up on Sunday alone.

As part of the development Skyline has paid for a totally new, easy-grade 6km trail to enable bikers of all abilities to enjoy the great terrain and stunning views on offer. The new trail is called Hammy’s Track after Ian Hamilton – the original founder of Skyline and the man who put the first track up the hill.

Skyline Enterprises CEO Jeff Staniland said the company had invested around NZ$450,000 to create the trail and on-site facilities to support the new venture.

These include a new ticketing window and entrance track to minimise wait times for all visitors and a new exit door and ramp at the top terminal providing direct access to the dedicated MTB start area. In addition, all gondolas have been fitted with specially designed bike racks and refurbished with new seat covers and protective mats.

Mr Staniland acknowledged everyone involved in creating the new venture including Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), custodian of the land through which all trails run.

“The idea that Skyline could provide a mountain bike service has been around for a long time but it hasn’t been without its challenges. We are very conscious of not comprising the quality of service to our existing customers. Hence our significant investment and partnerships with key stakeholders to ensure this is a fantastic biking experience and a successful addition to our portfolio.

“My thanks go out to everyone involved. Not just within Skyline but also QLDC, Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, the local biking community and all suppliers and contractors who have contributed to the project,” he said.
