Early indications are that the Queenstown Lakes District Council Dog Policy is attracting a strong response from the community, CivicCorp policy planner Lisa Kissell said.

Submissions on the council’s proposed ‘Policy on Dogs’ would not close until 3 October 2005; however a steady stream of submissions was already being received.

“We currently have 45 submissions on the policy, mostly from dog owners,” Ms Kissell said.

The submissions varied from requests for more dog exercise areas to requests to allow dogs to be off the leash on walking tracks and on council reserves.

The council also hoped to hear from people who did not own dogs.

“This policy affects non dog owners as well as dog owners and it’s important that they take the opportunity to find out what is being proposed and to submit on the policy,” Ms Kissell said.

The policy could be viewed at council and CivicCorp offices, as well as at public libraries and was available on the council website www.qldc.govt.nz.
