Off Road Adventures has been running quad, dirt bike and buggy tours out of Queenstown for more than 35 years, on private high country trails about five minutes from town.
Quad tours suit people who have never ridden anything: full tuition first, then a guide who paces the ride to the group and adjusts as riders find their feet. Dirt bikes are for riders who already know what they're doing. Buggies come as self-drive or ride-along, so someone who would rather not drive can still come along. Bikes, helmets and wet weather gear are supplied.
Tours run in the wet as well as the dry - the quads handle rain without complaint, and two-wheel riders just need a bit more skill for it. No licence is needed for the farm-based tours, since they stay off public roads. The longer multi-day dirt bike trips do use public roads, so a licence is required for those.
Wear long trousers and bring a camera; your guide will carry it on the trail. There is a minimum age for the quads, so check when you book.
