Where to eat and drink in Queenstown — restaurants for dinner, cafes for the morning, bars for afterwards. How the town is laid out, and when to book.
Queenstown's food is concentrated rather than spread out. Most of it sits in the few blocks between the Mall, Beach Street and the waterfront, with more along Frankton Road, out at Arrowtown and among the vines at Gibbston.
- Restaurants — dinner, from lakefront tables to the drive over the Crown Range.
- Cafes — breakfast, coffee, and somewhere to sit out a wet morning.
- Bars & pubs — after dinner, and in winter, after the mountain.
The short list
The 2026 MICHELIN Guide reached the Wakatipu, and its results are a fair map of the top end: two stars for Essence on the hill above the lake, one for Amisfield out on the Lake Hayes road, and Bib Gourmands for Aosta in Arrowtown, The Cow off Cow Lane and Sundays at Frankton. Below that the town is better than its size suggests: Rātā rewrites its menu daily, and there is Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Malaysian and Latin American cooking within a few minutes' walk of the Mall.
When to book
Two stretches fill up: ski season from June to September, and high summer from Christmas through January. Book dinner ahead in either, particularly at weekends. Outside those months you can usually walk in, though a table at the top end still wants weeks rather than days.
