Waitiri Creek Wines has moved. The cellar door that spent years in the old church at Gibbston now pours in a restored historic woolshed at 91 Gibbston Back Road.
The label was established in 1993 by Alistair Ward, Paula Ramage and the Ward family. Paula grew up in Alexandra, and the Wards farmed for many years on Malaghans Road near Arrowtown. "Waitiri" translates roughly from te reo Māori as "thundering water", after the rapids on the Kawarau River below the two Gibbston vineyards.
Tastings are built around the hand-harvested Central Otago pinot noir the family is known for, with craft beer and spirits alongside it, food served, and the woolshed available for private events.
Through winter the cellar door opens Wednesday to Sunday by appointment and is closed Monday and Tuesday, so ring before you drive out. Hours shift with the season — check waitiricreekwines.co.nz for what is current.
