Milford Sound is four hours by road from Queenstown, or about 45 minutes in the air. Flying turns the trip into a half-day rather than a full one, and the run across the Southern Alps into Fiordland — hanging valleys, alpine lakes, ice on the tops — is half the reason to do it that way.
Flights leave from Queenstown, transfers from most town accommodation are included, and every seat is a window seat with commentary as you go.
The options
- Fly Cruise Fly — fly both ways with a cruise on the fiord in between. Four to five hours all up, from $749 adult and $569 child.
- Coach Cruise Fly — coach in through the Homer Tunnel, cruise, then fly home. A longer day, but you see the road as well.
- Milford Sound overflight — the flight without the cruise, for when time is short.
- Fly Cruise Heli — the cruise plus a helicopter alpine landing.
Mount Aspiring and Aoraki/Mount Cook flights and private charters run from the same base.

- Weather: Fiordland makes its own, and flights are cancelled or moved often enough that it is worth leaving a spare day
