Steam across Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw to a gourmet BBQ at Walter Peak — about four hours, from $175.
The TSS Earnslaw — the 1912 coal-fired steamship that has worked Lake Wakatipu for over a century — sails you across the lake to Walter Peak High Country Farm, where a gourmet BBQ lunch or dinner waits at the homestead.
It is an informal buffet: wood-fired meats, salads and plenty of vegetarian options, with a menu that changes with the seasons. After eating there is time to wander the lakeside gardens or watch a farm demonstration before the return sailing.
The full outing runs about three and a half to four hours, with the cruise itself around 45 minutes each way. Prices start from about $175 a head. Check in at the RealNZ Visitor Centre on Steamer Wharf, 88 Beach Street, 20 minutes before departure, and book ahead — when the Earnslaw comes off the lake for her annual maintenance, a catamaran covers the run.
