Lone Star has been on Brecon Street since 1991, and it still trades on the same idea: big plates of meat, cold beer and a room that does not mind noise.
The cooking is straightforward and generous. Grass-fed prime steak, slow-roasted lamb, venison medallions and gourmet burgers make up the core of the menu, with fresh seafood and a run of chicken dishes alongside. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are on the menu rather than tucked away as an afterthought.
The fit-out leans cowboy, with old Queenstown pieces on the walls. It suits a group coming down off the hill, and it is one of the easier rooms in town to feed a mixed table without an argument.
Doors open at 4.30pm every day and it runs till late. Free wifi. Lone Star runs a loyalty app across its restaurants if you eat at the chain elsewhere in the country.
