Wide, open ski terrain in the Cardrona Valley, with big parks and learner slopes.
Cardrona sits above the Cardrona Valley Road, over the Crown Range from Queenstown and up the valley from Wānaka. The terrain is wide and open — long, rolling groomers rather than tight trails — which is why it suits people still finding their feet as much as those who are not.
Cardrona and Treble Cone are run together by RealNZ under a single brand, and a season pass covers both mountains. McDougall's Chondola and the Whitestar Express do most of the work getting you around, and Soho Basin adds a further stretch of alpine terrain.
Learners get their own ground: conveyors and gentle slopes set apart from the main runs. The First Timer package is $249 and includes a 4.5-hour group lesson. Cardrona Ski Kindy takes younger children while the rest of the family skis, and there are multi-day programmes for kids old enough to be out on the snow.
The freestyle set-up is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, with halfpipes and park lines graded from small first features up to the big ones. Check the mountain report before you drive up — the road climbs a long way and conditions at the base tell you little about what is happening at the top.
