Mackenzies is the restaurant and bar at the Rendezvous Heritage Hotel on Fernhill Road, a couple of minutes' drive from the centre of town and set above Lake Wakatipu.
The kitchen works a seasonal New Zealand menu: a buffet breakfast from 6am, bar food through the middle of the day, then an a la carte dinner service. You can eat by the fire when it is cold or outside when it is not, and the wine list stays local enough to be worth reading properly.
The name comes from one of the district's early settler families. The room is pitched at casual rather than formal, and it takes hotel guests, people coming up from town and anyone after a table with an outlook without booking weeks ahead.
Breakfast 6am to 10am, the bar 11.30am to 10pm, dinner 5pm to 9.30pm, seven days.
