Lodge dining on the lake at Closeburn
The Dining Room is the restaurant at Rosewood Matakauri, about ten minutes out of town on the Glenorchy road at Closeburn. It is a lodge rather than a hotel — small, low-key, and set on the lake edge with the water, the Remarkables and Cecil and Walter Peak filling the windows. MICHELIN put it in the Selected list in 2026.
The kitchen is unusually well supplied. There is a kitchen garden and beehives on the property, and Double Rock Farm out in the Kawarau Gorge grows organic berries, quince, hazelnuts and mulberries for the lodge alone. The menu is à la carte and changes with what comes in; there is also a wine-paired tasting menu.
There is more than one place to eat here. The main dining room has the picture windows, the Remarkables Terrace is the alfresco option with a fire, and the Library does fireside dinners.
Bookings go through the lodge and are open to people not staying there — worth ringing ahead to confirm which service you want. And drive: there is no walking back from Closeburn.
