Bendix Stables occupies the 1873 stables built for Bendix Hallenstein, on Buckingham Green just off Arrowtown's main street. The old hay store and barn are now two dining rooms - upstairs by the fireplace for a long dinner or a larger group, downstairs around the pot belly fire for a table of two or four - with a courtyard out front for warmer days.
The kitchen is led by head chef and co-owner Nick Pagan, and the menu changes with the seasons around local produce: small plates through to large, and desserts. To drink, New Zealand craft beer and Central Otago wine.
It is set up for families, with a kids' menu and room for children to run about. In winter the outdoor fire is lit for mulled wine and s'mores; in summer local bands play.
Open Tuesday to Saturday, 11.30am to 9pm, for lunch and dinner.
