Wood-fired buffet at the top of Brecon Street

Prospects sits at the top of Brecon Street, a few minutes' walk from the Skyline gondola base, and comes from the team behind Charley Noble in Wellington and the catering business The Food Lab.

It is a buffet, and says so, but the wood-fired grill and rotisserie are the centre of it — Canterbury spring lamb rump, scotch fillet with Café de Paris butter, free-range chicken with chilli and fennel, pork belly — carved to order at the counter, with seafood, seasonal vegetables, salads and desserts around it. Dinner only, from 5pm.

One price covers the food: $158 for adults, $58 for children 5 to 12, free under 5. Drinks are extra. That arithmetic suits a group or a family better than it suits a light eater, and it makes the bill knowable before you sit down, which is rarer than it should be at this end of town. Book ahead.
