Hippo Lodge sits up at 4 Anderson Heights, overlooking the town — close enough to walk down in a few minutes, far enough up the hill to be quiet at night. It's a small hostel spread across three houses, with rooms running from dorms to deluxe doubles and lake views to go with them.
There are no TVs, deliberately, so the lounges stay social. Beds come made up with sheets and a duvet on inner-sprung mattresses, and there's a guest kitchen, a barbecue for outdoor meals in any season, laundry and internet. Reception books local tours and activities without the hard sell.
