Gibbston Valley Winery sits about 25 minutes from town on State Highway 6, where the Kawarau Gorge opens out into vines. The Winery Restaurant is in the middle of it — a bistro-style room of oak, wine barrels and windows onto the rows.
Lunch runs midday to 3pm, seven days. The kitchen works with Central Otago and Southland produce: wild rabbit lasagne with Romano truffle, cured salmon, Southland scotch fillet, Cardrona lamb slow-cooked until it gives way.
The wine is why most people make the drive. Four ranges are poured by the glass, so lining a flight up against lunch is straightforward. Book ahead — it is a long way to come on spec.
