The Lodge Restaurant is at Gibbston Valley Lodge and Spa on State Highway 6, a 25-minute drive from Queenstown, with schist cliffs above it and vines running out in every direction.
Dinner is served every day, either inside under the timber ceiling by the fire or out in the courtyard while the sun comes off the valley. The menu is seasonal and locally sourced — South Island alpine venison, Cardrona lamb, fresh salmon — and it changes with what is available, so treat any dish you have read about as a hint rather than a promise.
The wines come from the winery next door, which is most of the reason to make the drive. Reservations are essential, and the restaurant is open to casual diners as well as people staying at the lodge.
