Harris Mountains has been guiding skiers and boarders into the Southern Alps for decades, and now flies from three bases: Queenstown, Wānaka and Aoraki/Mount Cook. It is Qualmark rated and operated by Totally Tourism.
You want to be at least a confident intermediate on piste, with the legs for a full day and some appetite for adventure. Guides pick terrain to match the group, so a first-timer and a regular can both get a good day out of it.
How a day runs
- You confirm the booking at 6pm the night before
- The weather call comes in the morning; if it will not fly, you reschedule
- Pick-up, then a briefing at the staging area on transceivers, helicopter drill and mountain safety
- Runs through the morning, a buffet lunch on the hill, then more runs through the afternoon
Days and rates
Days are sold by run count: four runs from $1,645 per person, seven from $1,950, ten from $2,295. A five-run day at Aoraki/Mount Cook is from $2,550. Private charters start at $14,500 including GST for a single load. Minimum age is 13.
