Heli-Skiing

Heli-skiing puts you on Southern Alps terrain the lifts do not reach: untracked snow, a guide with each group, and a helicopter instead of a queue. You do not need to be an expert. A confident intermediate who can ski a full day on piste will get a good day out of it, because guides pick terrain to match the group. Days are sold by the number of runs, so the real decision is how much vertical your legs will take.

Who flies from here

Harris Mountains Heliski flies from Queenstown, Wānaka and Aoraki/Mount Cook — four runs from $1,645 a person, seven from $1,950, ten from $2,295, minimum age 13. Southern Lakes Heliski keeps groups small: four runs $1,650, six $1,850, eight $2,050, with an avalanche airbag for every guest. Alpine Heliski NZ grades its days from a short introductory trip upwards and can fly straight from Queenstown Airport to the first run. All three run private charters. Backcountry Helicopters at Makarora no longer lists heliskiing, so ask before planning a ski day around them.

Practical detail

The season is winter, roughly June to September, and every day is weather dependent. Bookings are confirmed the evening before and the flying call comes in the morning; a washed-out day is rescheduled rather than lost. Lunch on the mountain is included, as are the powder skis and the safety gear — bring your own clothing and goggles. Rates are set each season, so confirm before you book.
