The Wai Waterfront restaurant and wine bar has pride of place in Queenstown's Bay dress circle. The exclusive setting is an unrivalled location overlooking the lake and the snow-capped Remarkables.

Wai Waterfront RestaurantWhile it's site on the Steamer Wharf is a favourite gathering place in the summer, for alfresco dining, trout spotting and a glass of wine in the sun, winter has it's own attractions.

On a cold winter's evening there is nothing more inviting than the cosy, warm atmosphere of the Wai Restaurant. Nestled inside overlooking Lake Wakatipu diners can watch the ever-changing colours of the snow capped Remarkable Mountains. The après-ski ambience makes it a favourite dining place for skiers.

With its wooden floor and rattan, upholstered chairs, the restaurant has an elegant, simple design highlighted by the draped ceiling. Photographs and memorabilia of early days in Queenstown are a feature.

Owners Alex Boyes, Jan Rae-Robertson and Martin and Megan James have between them years of hospitality experience and this combined with Martin's talents as Head Chef, ensures that they consistently deliver a winning combination of uncomplicated and traditional dishes, in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Martin is putting his cuisine on the culinary map after returning from four years in the UK honing his skills.

He provides an interesting and enticing menu, effortlessly delivering flavours and consistency to delight the Wai's new and existing clientele. Becoming known for one of the best oyster menus in the country New Zealand oysters are the Wai's trump card. Natural, warmed, baked or battered – oyster lovers have an endless selection.

The Wai's fish and seafood choices change daily and combined with New Zealand lamb, beef, duck and vegetarian dishes the menu is extensive and a true reflection of outstanding New Zealand cuisine.

Martin's philosophy is to offer simple good food, prepared well. Local produce is used wherever possible, and combined with Martins flair and passion, guests are assured of delicious but unpretentious food.

Gibbston Valley Balfour Cheese is presented as a course with black pepper, and a feijoa jam sandwich, matched with Church Road Reserve Noble Semillon.

Almost everything on the menu has a suggested wine match and for the ultimate indulgence the chef's degustation menu boasts a seven course dinner inclusive of wine matches.

An exceptional wine list has been developed to complement the food and staff have an intimate knowledge of wines and there match with the menu. A full selection of New Zealand and international labels are featured along with notable cellar selections from Cental Otago's leading wineries.

Wai Restaurant's reputation is spreading and received rave reviews after catering for the international Pinot Noir conference earlier this year. Food writers and wine critics from as far away as New York were impressed with the five-course menu devised for the occasion.

The team at Wai restaurant are passionate about what they do and they are committed to providing professional service in what is becoming one of Queenstown's most sought after dining spots.
